Description
Viewed from the anterior aspect, the C5 vertebra centers on a broad vertebral body with slightly raised, lipped margins along its superior and inferior endplates, a common cervical contour. Laterally, the uncinate processes (uncus corporis) project from the superior surface of the body and frame the intervertebral space, while the pedicles arise posterolaterally to lead toward the vertebral arch. Portions of the transverse processes and their anterior tubercles may be appreciated at the lateral edges, positioned inferior to the superior articular region and anterior to the foramen transversarium. An anterior perspective at C5 matters because it emphasizes the uncovertebral joints (joints of Luschka) and the C4 to C5 and C5 to C6 disc spaces, sites frequently implicated in cervical spondylosis with osteophyte formation. Those osteophytes and uncovertebral hypertrophy can encroach on the intervertebral foramen, contributing to C5 radiculopathy or to adjacent-level foraminal stenosis, and they also influence operative planning for anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, where midline orientation on the vertebral bodies and endplate preparation are key. Small landmarks, big consequences. Use this illustration for gross anatomy teaching of cervical vertebrae, spine modules in physical therapy and chiropractic curricula, and as a clean reference figure in manuscripts discussing cervical disc disease, osteophytes, or ACDF approach anatomy.
