Description
Arched within the maxilla, the maxillary dentition is shown from an inferior (palatal) perspective, with the central and lateral incisors positioned most anteriorly, canines at the anterolateral corners of the dental arch, and premolars and molars progressing posteriorly toward the maxillary tuberosity. Crown morphology transitions from incisal edges to pointed canine cusps and then to broader occlusal tables on the posterior teeth. Root anatomy is visible through the transparent upper jaw, including the typically bifurcated roots of the first premolars and the three-root configuration of maxillary molars (two buccal, one palatal) seated within the alveolar process. Palatal vault and the hard palate provide osseous context medial to the tooth rows. Seeing the teeth in situ, with crowns, cervical regions, and roots aligned to the alveoli, supports teaching that dental anatomy is inseparable from maxillary bone anatomy and the curvature of the maxillary arch. This angle also maps cleanly onto common clinical tasks: local anesthetic deposition for posterior superior alveolar and greater palatine nerve blocks is planned relative to the maxillary molars and palatal tissues, and extraction or endodontic access must respect the divergent molar roots and their relationship to the maxillary sinus floor. Root form matters. It explains why maxillary molars complicate extractions and why palatal root canals can be difficult to negotiate.
