Description
Shown in left lateral profile, the maxillary dentition is rendered with transparent maxillary bone so the crowns and roots can be read against the anterior wall and floor of the maxillary sinus. From anterior to posterior, the visible sequence logically includes the maxillary central and lateral incisors, canine, first and second premolars, and first and second molars, with the posterior teeth demonstrating their buccolingual crown width and multi-cusped occlusal morphology. Root apices sit superior to the alveolar crest within the maxilla, and the sinus floor drapes superior to the premolar and molar roots, where proximity is often closest. One tooth is color-highlighted (blue) as the focal structure. A lateral maxillary view like this earns its place when you need to teach, plan, or document the relationship between posterior maxillary roots and the maxillary sinus. This is the anatomy behind oroantral communication after extraction of a maxillary first molar, and it is also the limiting geometry for posterior maxillary implants when sinus pneumatization leaves inadequate vertical bone height.
