Description
Centered on the male pelvis and proximal femora, the hip joint capsule is shown with its major ligamentous thickenings: the iliofemoral ligament spanning from the anterior inferior iliac spine to the intertrochanteric line, the pubofemoral ligament reinforcing the anteroinferior capsule from the superior pubic ramus, and the ischiofemoral ligament sweeping posteriosuperiorly from the ischial portion of the acetabular rim toward the femoral neck. Medially, the acetabular labrum and transverse acetabular ligament frame the acetabular notch, while capsular fibers blend proximally with the bony margins of the acetabulum and distally with the femoral neck. The iliofemoral ligament, in particular, limits hyperextension and contributes to the upright stance with minimal muscular effort, while the pubofemoral ligament restrains excessive abduction and external rotation. Posterior capsular structures, reinforced by the ischiofemoral ligament, are the tissues stressed during posterior approach exposure and are commonly implicated when patients dislocate posteriorly after arthroplasty. Orthopaedic teaching files and gross anatomy courses can use this plate to correlate named capsular bands with palpable and radiographic landmarks of the acetabulum and femoral neck, and to explain why specific ranges of motion are restricted after arthroscopy or arthroplasty.
