Description
Dorsally, the medial marginal vein tracks along the ulnar border of the male hand, beginning near the superficial venous network over the little finger and hypothenar region and then coursing proximally toward the dorsal venous arch. Superficial to the dorsal interossei and extensor apparatus, it runs posterior to the metacarpals and phalanges that are rendered in underlying skeletal detail. Small dorsal digital veins converge into this marginal channel, which then angles toward the ulnar aspect of the wrist, where it typically contributes to the basilic vein rather than the cephalic pathway. Landmarks matter here. That ulnar-sided dorsal route is a common site for cannulation attempts and iatrogenic injury when superficial veins are small or mobile, and the illustration clarifies why the vein can be difficult to stabilize over the metacarpals. For teaching upper-limb venous return, this view also helps distinguish the medial marginal vein to basilic vein continuity from the lateral marginal vein to cephalic vein course, a distinction that becomes relevant during planning for hemodialysis access or when mapping superficial veins for graft harvest. The dorsal perspective keeps the relationship to the extensor tendons and bony prominences explicit. Use this asset in gross anatomy labs, nursing and phlebotomy curricula, and vascular access guidelines where learners need a clear dorsal roadmap for superficial hand veins. It also fits well in hand surgery or plastic surgery publications discussing venous drainage patterns, flap planning, or dorsal hand incisions and closure.
