Description
Running horizontally across the superior anterior thorax, the female clavicle (collarbone) spans from the manubrium of the sternum medially to the acromion of the scapula laterally, forming the anterior strut of the pectoral girdle. Its S shaped shaft places the medial two thirds convex anteriorly and the lateral third concave anteriorly, with the sternal end thicker and more robust than the flattened acromial end. Along the inferior surface, the subclavian groove lies centrally, while the conoid tubercle and trapezoid line sit posteroinferiorly near the lateral end for attachment of the coracoclavicular ligament complex. A palpable landmark. Clinically, the anterior view matters because it matches the way you inspect deformity and tenderness after a fall onto the shoulder or outstretched hand, the classic mechanism for midshaft clavicle fracture. Appreciating the relationship of the clavicle to the acromioclavicular and sternoclavicular joints helps in grading AC separations and understanding why distal fractures may destabilize when the coracoclavicular ligaments detach from the lateral fragment. Sex specific morphology is also relevant in osteology and forensic anthropology, where female clavicles tend to be shorter and more gracile, and in implant selection where plate contouring depends on the bone’s curvature.
