Description
Anterior orientation places the clavicle (collarbone) as an S-shaped strut spanning between the manubrium of the sternum medially and the acromion of the scapula laterally. The medial (sternal) end appears bulky and rounded, while the lateral (acromial) end is flatter, with the shaft bowing anteriorly in its lateral third and remaining more convex anteriorly at the medial half. Along the inferior surface, you would expect the costal tuberosity (impression for the costoclavicular ligament) near the sternal end, the subclavian groove through the midshaft, and the conoid tubercle with trapezoid line toward the posteroinferior aspect of the lateral end. A key landmark. This anterior view matters because clavicular contour and end morphology guide reduction and fixation planning for midshaft fractures, which most often occur at the junction of the middle and lateral thirds where the bone narrows and curvature changes. Medial displacement patterns also make more sense when the sternocleidomastoid pull on the medial fragment is contrasted with the weight of the upper limb on the lateral fragment through the scapular suspensory complex, and the nearby sternoclavicular joint remains the clinical checkpoint for suspected SC dislocation. It also supports teaching the sternoclavicular and acromioclavicular articulations as the only bony connections between the upper limb and axial skeleton.
