Description
Cut in lateral profile, the testis is opened to expose the parenchyma organized into lobules of seminiferous tubules separated by fibrous septa radiating inward from the tunica albuginea. Posteriorly, the mediastinum testis forms a thickened longitudinal ridge where the rete testis collects sperm from the straight tubules, and this region lies adjacent to where the epididymis would normally drape along the posterolateral border. Superficial to the parenchyma, the tunica vaginalis (parietal and visceral layers) would be expected as the serous covering, with the lateral convex surface facing outward and the medial surface oriented toward the scrotal septum. Orientation matters. A lateral cut section is a workhorse view for teaching intratesticular drainage and correlating it with pathology that localizes to specific compartments, from rete testis ectasia to postinflammatory scarring that distorts lobular architecture. It also supports clinical discussions around testicular torsion and ischemia, where vascular compromise first affects the metabolically active seminiferous epithelium, and around testis-sparing surgery, where the relationship of a mass to the mediastinum and tunica albuginea influences the feasibility of enucleation versus orchiectomy. Palpable lesions and ultrasound findings often get described relative to these same landmarks.
