Description
Lateral section anatomy is presented through a cut surface of a hair follicle within the skin, with the hair shaft continuing superiorly from the epidermal surface and the hair root extending inferiorly to the bulb. Concentric layers define the follicle wall, including the inner root sheath closely investing the growing hair and the outer root sheath continuous with the epidermis, all surrounded by a connective tissue sheath in the dermis. At the inferior pole, the dermal papilla projects into the hair bulb, and a sebaceous gland opens into the follicular canal on its superficial aspect; the arrector pili muscle runs obliquely from the superficial dermis to attach on the lateral follicle. Clear landmarks. This side-on cross section matters because it makes the follicular infundibulum, isthmus, and bulb easier to conceptually separate, which is exactly what you need when teaching acne pathogenesis, folliculitis, and the anatomy of a pilar (trichilemmal) cyst. The relationship of the sebaceous gland duct to the follicular canal clarifies why obstruction and bacterial overgrowth cluster at the pilosebaceous unit, while the dermal papilla and bulb highlight the target zone for alopecia therapies and for injury patterns in scarring alopecias. Use it for integumentary blocks in medical and PA curricula, dermatopathology primers that correlate gross structure with histologic layers, and patient-facing dermatology materials explaining hair growth cycles, sebaceous activity, and piloerection.
