Profile view of the male trachea tracks inferiorly from the larynx to the carina, where it bifurcates into the right and left main bronchi. From this lateral perspective, the right main bronchus takes a shorter, wider, more vertical course toward the right lung hilum, while the left main bronchus runs more obliquely and inferiorly toward the left hilum, passing anterior to the esophagus and beneath the aortic arch region. Cartilaginous rings support the tracheal wall superiorly, and bronchial cartilaginous plates become more irregular as the airway branches into lobar and segmental bronchi. Clear branching geometry. That asymmetry between the main bronchi is not academic trivia; it explains why aspirated material and endobronchial foreign bodies lodge more often in the right bronchial tree, classically the right lower lobe bronchi in a supine patient.
