Rendered from a lateral perspective of the male head and neck, the deep cervical fascia is presented as a layered aponeurotic system surrounding the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius, then continuing anteriorly toward the suprahyoid and infrahyoid region of the anterior cervical triangle. Superficial facial muscles such as orbicularis oculi, zygomaticus major, and orbicularis oris sit anterior and superior to the masseter, while temporalis occupies the lateral cranial vault above the zygomatic arch. Deep neck fascial laminae are shown investing the musculature, with the sheaths positioned to frame the visceral corridor of the neck medial to the sternocleidomastoid and anterior to the prevertebral compartment. Layering is the point. For teaching and clinical planning, few topics cause more confusion than where infection and fluid can travel in the neck. A lateral fascial map helps anchor the classic spaces: the carotid sheath adjacent to the sternocleidomastoid, the retropharyngeal and danger spaces posterior to the visceral compartment, and the prevertebral layer overlying the cervical spine and deep neck flexors, all of which shape the spread of odontogenic infection and deep neck abscess. The same planes guide safe dissection during tracheostomy, thyroidectomy exposure, and lateral neck approaches where identifying and respecting fascial boundaries reduces bleeding and nerve injury. Use this asset in gross anatomy and head and neck modules to demonstrate compartmental anatomy alongside sternocleidomastoid and the anterior triangle, or in ENT and oral and maxillofacial surgery texts discussing deep neck space infection pathways and surgical drainage routes.
