Description
Seen in lateral profile, the infrahyoid fascia appears as a dense cervical aponeurosis spanning the anterior neck deep to the platysma and superficial to the strap muscles, with a firm superior attachment along the inferior border of the hyoid bone. Posteriorly it blends toward the carotid sheath region, while inferiorly it continues toward the manubrium and clavicle in continuity with the superficial layer of deep cervical fascia. The sternocleidomastoid forms a prominent anterolateral boundary, with the trapezius and deltoid contouring the posterior neck and shoulder, and the clavicle and superior scapular region providing bony reference points. Clean planes. For teaching cervical fascial compartments, a lateral view clarifies relationships that are harder to appreciate in midline schematics, including how the infrahyoid fascia invests the infrahyoid muscle group and interfaces with the visceral compartment. That matters clinically when tracking the spread of deep neck infection or postoperative fluid, because fascial planes can channel collections from the suprahyoid region toward the anterior mediastinum or confine them around the larynx and thyroid. The hyoid attachment is a surgical landmark during tracheostomy planning and open approaches to the larynx and thyroid, where dissection proceeds through superficial fascia and strap muscle investing layers without violating the carotid sheath laterally.
