Description
Anterior neck anatomy is rendered in a male figure with emphasis on the infrahyoid fascia forming a connective tissue sheath over the strap muscles inferior to the hyoid bone. The fascial lamina lies superficial to the sternohyoid and omohyoid, blending laterally with the deep cervical fascia near the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid as the neck transitions toward the shoulder. Superiorly it relates to the body of the hyoid, while inferiorly it continues toward the manubrium and clavicular region, where aponeurotic fibers integrate with adjacent cervical and pectoral fascial planes. Muscle bellies and tendinous intervals remain clearly separated, supporting layer-by-layer orientation. Understanding the infrahyoid fascia matters in anterior neck surgery because it dictates how the strap muscles are opened and retracted to reach the larynx, thyroid gland, and upper trachea. Midline approaches for tracheostomy, thyroidectomy, and laryngectomy often traverse these fascial planes, and failure to stay in the correct layer can increase bleeding from anterior jugular venous tributaries and obscure the surgical field. Fascial continuity toward the root of the neck also frames how postoperative hematoma or infection may track inferiorly into the suprasternal space.
