Lateral head anatomy is rendered with a dense neurovascular overlay across the scalp, face, and temporal region, anchored to the bony contours of the cranium and skull base. Superficial branches of the external carotid system, including the superficial temporal artery and its frontal and parietal rami, course superiorly in the temporal fascia while the facial artery and vein sweep anterior to the masseter and turn toward the angle of the mouth and nose. Cutaneous sensory nerves from the trigeminal nerve distribute across the forehead and cheek (supraorbital and supratrochlear nerves superiorly, infraorbital nerve centrally, mental nerve inferiorly), and posteriorly the greater and lesser occipital nerves ascend from the upper cervical roots along the occiput. Deep to this surface map, the cerebral cortex is suggested by gyri and sulci, with pial vessels spread over the hemispheric convexity and a caudal continuation into the spinal cord. Dense territory. This side-on arrangement matters because it mirrors the corridors used in temporal scalp flaps, craniotomy incisions, and parotid and facial approaches where you must respect the relationship between the superficial temporal vessels, the auriculotemporal nerve, and the facial nerve’s extracranial branches. Scalp lacerations bleed briskly because arteries tethered in the dense connective tissue do not retract, and temporal arteritis targets the superficial temporal artery along the lateral forehead.
