Description
Presented in right lateral profile, the male cranium is rendered without the posterior cervical musculature to expose the occipital lymphatics coursing in the subcutaneous plane over the squamous part of the occipital bone. Small collecting lymphatic vessels converge toward occipital lymph nodes clustered near the external occipital protuberance and superior nuchal line, then track anteroinferiorly toward the mastoid region and upper deep cervical chain. Cranial landmarks including the lambdoid suture, parietal bone, temporal bone, and external acoustic meatus provide bony orientation, while adjacent blue pathways indicate regional neurovascular routes in the auriculo-occipital territory. Scale matters here. These channels are fine. Occipital lymphatic drainage is a frequent blind spot in head and neck teaching because it sits posterior to the ear, outside the typical “facial nodes” diagrams, yet it is clinically relevant in scalp infections, pediculosis, posterior scalp lacerations, and cutaneous malignancy of the occipital scalp with sentinel node consideration. The muscle-free presentation clarifies why occipital nodes are palpated superficially along the superior nuchal line and why edema or lymphangitis can track from the posterior scalp toward retroauricular and upper cervical basins.
