Description
Viewed laterally on a male head, the parotid gland lies anteroinferior to the auricle with its lymphatic capillaries and collecting vessels coursing superficially over the gland and along the preauricular region. Green lymphatic pathways track adjacent to the bony external acoustic meatus and continue inferiorly toward the angle and ramus of the mandible, maintaining close contact with the parotid fascia and the lateral surface of the masseteric region where the muscle has been removed. Blue neural structures consistent with branches of the facial nerve (CN VII) radiate anteriorly from the stylomastoid region across the cheek, interlacing topographically with the parotid bed. This lateral dissection-style view matters because the parotid lymphatics share surgical real estate with the facial nerve and the periauricular soft tissues, so lymph node sampling, superficial parotidectomy, and postauricular approaches demand a clear mental map of what runs where. Parotid and preauricular nodes often enlarge with infections of the scalp, external ear, and lateral eyelids, and they are a common first-echelon drainage site for cutaneous malignancies of the temple and auricular region.
