Description
Positioned posterior to the auricle and superficial to the mastoid portion of the temporal bone, the retroauricular (mastoid) lymph nodes sit just inferior and posterior to the external acoustic meatus along the posterior auricular region. A lateral skull view brings the temporal, parietal, and occipital bones into profile, with the mastoid process forming the primary bony landmark immediately deep to the nodal cluster. Collecting lymphatic vessels course across the scalp and periauricular tissues toward these nodes, then continue inferiorly toward the upper deep cervical chain along the sternocleidomastoid region, even though the muscles have been removed for clarity. Sutures and dentition anchor orientation. Retroauricular nodes matter because they drain the posterolateral scalp, auricle, and external auditory canal, areas that frequently present with reactive lymphadenopathy after otitis externa, impetigo, or infected scalp lesions. Their relationship to the mastoid also makes them a practical surface landmark when you are differentiating simple nodal enlargement from mastoiditis, where tenderness and swelling over the mastoid process can coincide with regional nodal reactivity. A clean lateral, muscle-free view helps map lymphatic spread patterns from posterior auricular skin and scalp, a consideration in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma of the scalp and pinna.
