Description
Seen in lateral profile, the seventh thoracic vertebra (T7) sits in the mid thoracic curve between T6 superiorly and T8 inferiorly, with the intervertebral discs forming the adjacent fibrocartilaginous joints. The vertebral body lies anterior to the vertebral arch, while the spinous process projects posteriorly and slopes inferiorly in typical thoracic fashion. Superior and inferior vertebral notches are clearly defined along the pedicles, meeting their counterparts on the adjacent vertebrae to outline the intervertebral foramen. Facet orientation follows thoracic norms, with the superior articular process facing posteriorly and slightly laterally and the inferior articular process facing anteriorly and slightly medially. A lateral emphasis on the pedicle notches makes this view practical for understanding foraminal anatomy, where the exiting thoracic spinal nerve and segmental vessels course just inferior to the pedicle above. Small changes in disc height at T6–T7 or T7–T8 can narrow the intervertebral foramen, a common mechanism in degenerative foraminal stenosis that can produce bandlike thoracic radicular pain.
