Description
Positioned in the mid thoracic spine, the fifth thoracic vertebra (T5) is presented in lateral profile with its body anterior and the vertebral arch and spinous process projecting posteriorly. The superior and inferior endplates define the intervertebral disc spaces, while the pedicle bridges the vertebral body to the lamina to complete the vertebral foramen. Posterolaterally, the transverse process is seen in relation to the costal facet region typical of thoracic vertebrae, and the spinous process slopes inferiorly toward T6. A lateral view at T5 matters because this is the level where thoracic kyphosis and rib-bearing mechanics intersect with the spinal canal, making small changes in vertebral alignment clinically consequential. Wedge compression fractures from osteoporosis or trauma often declare themselves as anterior vertebral body height loss on the lateral projection, and T5 is within the common mid thoracic fracture distribution. Posterior element relationships also guide interpretation of spondylotic change and help orient a posterior approach when counting levels for thoracic decompression or instrumentation.
