Description
Running obliquely across the anterolateral neck, the sternocleidomastoideus (sternocleidomastoid) is seen in lateral profile as two inferior heads, a sternal head from the manubrium and a clavicular head from the medial clavicle, converging superiorly to a common insertion on the mastoid process and lateral half of the superior nuchal line. Anterior to its belly lie the infrahyoid strap muscles and the laryngeal framework, while posterior to its posterior border sit the upper fibers of trapezius and the deeper splenius capitis. Along its superior portion, the parotid tail and the region of the angle of the mandible provide surface landmarks that help orient the muscle’s course. Palpation of this muscle guides everyday clinical examination, because the sternocleidomastoid forms the anterior boundary of the posterior cervical triangle and a key reference for neurovascular anatomy. Just deep to its midportion, the carotid sheath structures, including the common carotid artery and internal jugular vein, run vertically, and the spinal accessory nerve emerges near the posterior border to cross toward trapezius. Congenital muscular torticollis and postural spasm are diagnosed and monitored by the characteristic shortening and prominence of one sternocleidomastoid. A reliable landmark. Use this lateral perspective for gross anatomy and head and neck surface anatomy teaching, for illustrating cervical triangle boundaries in medical textbooks, or for clinical communication in physiotherapy and ENT settings when documenting neck rotation limitation, torticollis, or accessory nerve injury after lymph node biopsy.
