Description
Prominent on the anterolateral neck, the sternocleidomastoideus is rendered in a lateral perspective with its sternal head arising from the manubrium and its clavicular head arising from the medial clavicle, the two bellies converging as they course superiorly to the mastoid process and lateral part of the superior nuchal line. Fiber direction is shown obliquely upward and posterior, placing the muscle superficial to the carotid sheath and infrahyoid strap muscles and anterior to the posterior triangle musculature. Adjacent landmarks include the auricle, mastoid region, mandibular ramus, and the superior shoulder contour, which helps orient proximal clavicular attachment versus the more medial sternal origin. A clear surface landmark. Clinically, this is the neck muscle you palpate when you trace the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid to find the carotid pulse and when you plan internal jugular venous access, since the vein typically lies deep to the muscle within the carotid sheath. Lateral anatomy also clarifies torticollis, where unilateral shortening or spasm rotates the face to the contralateral side and laterally flexes the head ipsilaterally, a pattern trainees often confuse until they see the two-headed origin and oblique insertion in context. The relationship to the posterior border matters too, because the spinal accessory nerve (CN XI) emerges near the midpoint of that border before crossing the posterior triangle, a common consideration in neck dissection and lymph node biopsy. Ideal for gross anatomy lab manuals, head and neck surgery teaching slides, and clinical skills materials covering surface anatomy, venipuncture landmarks, and cervical nerve injury patterns.
