Description
Dominating the lateral neck, the paired sternocleidomastoideus muscles (sternocleidomastoid) are rendered in red from a posterior oblique vantage, their posterior borders framing the transition between the posterior triangle and the more anterior visceral compartment. Each muscle belly tracks superolaterally toward its insertion on the mastoid process and adjacent lateral portion of the superior nuchal line, while its inferior heads converge toward the manubrium sterni and medial clavicle (cleido-). Posterior to the sternocleidomastoideus, the trapezius forms a broad superficial sheet over the nuchal region and shoulder girdle, and the cervical vertebrae align in the midline as a bony reference behind the soft tissues. Clinically, the sternocleidomastoideus is the most practical surface landmark for neck compartmentalization, because its anterior border approximates the carotid sheath contents (common carotid artery, internal jugular vein, vagus nerve) while its posterior border helps define the posterior triangle where the spinal accessory nerve becomes vulnerable. Congenital muscular torticollis arises from fibrosis and shortening of this muscle, producing ipsilateral head tilt with contralateral chin rotation, and this posterior view helps clarify why accessory nerve injury can present with trapezius weakness while sparing most sternocleidomastoideus function depending on lesion level. Palpation matters.
