Description
Running obliquely across the anterior neck, the paired sternocleidomastoideus (sternocleidomastoid) muscles are shown from their superior attachment on the mastoid process of the temporal bone and lateral part of the superior nuchal line to their inferior heads on the manubrium sterni and medial clavicle. Medial to each muscle belly lie the laryngeal and infrahyoid region contours, while the mandible, maxilla, nasal bones, zygomatic bones, and frontal bone provide the facial and cranial landmarks above. Inferiorly, the clavicles frame the root of the neck, with the upper ribs and superior thoracic cage visible deep and caudal to the muscular attachments. Bone is rendered in neutral tones, with muscle colored red for quick discrimination. Anterior presentation of the sternocleidomastoid matters because it defines the major surface landmark that divides the neck into anterior and posterior triangles, guiding bedside examination and procedural planning. Palpation along its anterior border helps locate the carotid pulse and orient the carotid sheath region, while its posterior border is used to approach the cervical plexus for a superficial cervical plexus block and to map lymph node levels in head and neck oncology. Torticollis often presents as unilateral sternocleidomastoid shortening with ipsilateral head tilt and contralateral chin rotation. This view makes that pattern easy to teach.
