Seen from a lateral aspect of the male knee, the superior lateral genicular vein courses along the superolateral margin of the joint line, tracking closely with the superior lateral genicular artery as it wraps around the distal femur. The vessel lies deep to the lateral retinacular tissues adjacent to the lateral femoral condyle, then runs anteriorly toward the peripatellar anastomotic network. Nearby osseous landmarks include the distal femoral metaphysis, the lateral tibial plateau inferiorly, and the patella positioned anterior to the femoral trochlea. Red arterial branches and blue venous channels clarify the paired circulation around the capsule. A side-on view of the genicular vessels matters because this is where periarticular circulation is most at risk during lateral arthrotomy, lateral release, and hardware placement around the distal femur. The superior lateral genicular vessels contribute to the perigenicular and peripatellar anastomoses, and disruption can complicate wound healing or contribute to postoperative hemarthrosis, while their relationship to the lateral femoral condyle helps orient surgeons when working near the suprapatellar pouch and lateral gutter.
