Description
Arising from the popliteal artery in the posterior knee, the inferior lateral genicular artery courses laterally across the back of the joint, deep to the lateral head of gastrocnemius and adjacent to the plantaris tendon when present. It passes inferior to the lateral femoral condyle and along the superior margin of the fibular head, then wraps anteriorly beneath the lateral collateral ligament toward the anterolateral tibial plateau. Portions of the distal femur, proximal tibia, and fibula frame the vessel’s path, with the popliteal vein and tibial nerve lying more superficial in the midline of the popliteal fossa. Small companion veins may parallel the artery. A tight corridor. For teaching the genicular anastomosis, this posterior perspective clarifies why the inferior lateral genicular artery becomes a key collateral channel when the superficial femoral or popliteal artery is stenosed, maintaining perfusion around the knee during flexion and extension. Surgeons will also recognize its relevance during lateral meniscal repair, high tibial osteotomy, and posterolateral corner reconstruction, where dissection near the fibular head and capsule risks vessel injury and postoperative hemarthrosis. The relationship to the lateral collateral ligament and the popliteus region is the practical takeaway.
