Arising from the popliteal artery within the popliteal fossa, the inferior medial genicular artery courses distally and medially along the posterior aspect of the knee, hugging the proximal tibia just inferior to the medial femoral condyle. Its curved path carries it anteriorly around the medial margin of the tibial plateau to join the periarticular genicular anastomosis. Posterior bony landmarks include the distal femur and proximal tibia, with articular cartilage covering the femoral condyles and tibial plateau, while accompanying blue venous channels track alongside the arterial branches. A posterior perspective matters because the inferior medial genicular artery sits in the surgical neighborhood of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus, the tibial attachment region of the posterior cruciate ligament, and the posteromedial capsule, all common targets in arthroscopy and open posterior approaches.
