Description
Seen from a lateral perspective of the male upper limb, the triceps brachii dominates the posterior compartment of the arm, with the lateral head bulging most prominently along the posterolateral humeral shaft and the long head running more medially as it descends from the infraglenoid tubercle. Distally, the three heads converge into the triceps tendon, which inserts on the olecranon of the ulna just posterior to the elbow joint, while the radius remains lateral in the forearm for orientation. Anteriorly, the biceps brachii and its tendon provide a clear counterpoint across the humerus. Clean separation of muscle bellies is the point. This angle matters because the interval between the long and lateral heads is where the radial nerve and profunda brachii artery travel in the radial groove of the humerus, a relationship that becomes clinically relevant in midshaft humeral fractures and during posterior approaches to the humerus. Lateral elbow pain can also be contextualized here, since terminal triceps insertion at the olecranon and adjacent fascia may be confused with pathology around the lateral epicondyle if the regional anatomy is not clear. Landmarks stay obvious. The lateral contour of the arm explains a lot.
