Description
Arising as a dense venous network around the inferior urinary bladder, the vesical venous plexus invests the bladder neck and proximal urethra in a male pelvis, lying inferior to the bladder base and anterior to the rectum. From this lateral perspective, the plexus tracks along the posterolateral bladder wall, where tributaries converge toward the internal iliac venous system, with the pelvic floor musculature forming an inferior sling. The prostate is closely related inferiorly, and the region of the seminal vesicles and distal ureters sits posterior and superolateral to the bladder base. Small veins interconnect freely. Clinically, this view matters because the vesical venous plexus is one of the principal bleeding sources during retropubic and transvesical exposure of the bladder neck, and it communicates with the prostatic venous plexus and the internal vertebral venous plexus. That valveless connectivity helps explain patterns of pelvic venous congestion and offers a route for hematogenous spread of malignancy from the prostate and bladder without a single, predictable lymphovascular pedicle. Lateral anatomy also frames safe dissection planes near the distal ureter and neurovascular bundles during radical cystoprostatectomy or prostatectomy.
