Description
Arising from the lateral surface of the cerebral hemisphere, the vein of Labbé (inferior anastomotic vein) courses posteriorly and inferiorly across the temporal lobe, bridging the superficial middle cerebral vein in the Sylvian region to the transverse sinus along the tentorial margin. Surrounding cortical landmarks typically include the lateral sulcus, superior and middle temporal gyri, and the posterior temporal and parietal opercular cortex, with superficial cortical veins converging toward the anastomotic channel. Deep to the venous network, the brainstem continues into the cervical spinal cord, and the upper cervical vertebrae and exiting cervical spinal nerves frame the craniocervical junction in lateral profile. Orientation matters. The Labbé vein sits lateral, superficial, and inferior relative to the superior sagittal sinus pathway, and it drains toward the posteroinferior dural venous sinuses. For neurosurgeons and neurointerventionalists, this vessel is a practical hazard and a planning landmark, not a textbook ornament. Temporal craniotomies, middle cranial fossa approaches, and procedures near the transverse sinus and tentorium risk traction or sacrifice of the vein of Labbé, which can precipitate venous infarction or hemorrhagic edema of the temporal lobe when collateral drainage is limited. Variation is common: the vein may be dominant, duplicated, or drain closer to the transverse-sigmoid junction, so a clean lateral depiction helps correlate angiography, MRV/CTV, and operative exposure. Neuroanatomy and neuroradiology courses can use this plate to teach superficial cerebral venous drainage patterns and the anastomotic connections between the Sylvian venous complex and the transverse sinus. It also suits operative atlases, resident teaching files, and patient-specific preoperative planning discussions where preserving temporal lobe venous outflow is the goal.
