Description
Viewed from the lateral aspect, the distal femur, proximal tibia, and patella frame the knee joint while the iliotibial tract and biceps femoris tendon lie superficially on the posterolateral side. Anteriorly, the quadriceps tendon continues into the patellar ligament inserting on the tibial tuberosity, with the lateral collateral ligament spanning from the lateral femoral epicondyle to the fibular head just posterior to it. Running posterior to the joint line, the popliteal artery transitions into its genicular branches, while accompanying veins course in parallel and converge toward the popliteal vein within the popliteal fossa. Red arterial and blue venous channels emphasize the periarticular network. A lateral perspective is where the genicular anastomosis makes practical sense, because you can track how the superior and inferior lateral genicular arteries, recurrent branches from the anterior tibial artery, and contributions from the descending branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery maintain perfusion when the knee flexes and the popliteal vessel is kinked.
