Seen from a lateral perspective in an adult male skeleton, the clavicle (collarbone) arcs anteriorly at its medial (sternal) end toward the manubrium and sweeps posteriorly as it approaches the lateral (acromial) end, creating the familiar S-like contour along the shaft. Superior and slightly posterior to the first rib, it spans from the sternoclavicular joint region medially to the acromioclavicular joint laterally, where it meets the acromion of the scapula. Posterior to the clavicle, the thoracic vertebrae and rib cage provide a fixed reference for the shoulder girdle; inferiorly, the proximal humerus sits lateral to the thorax at the glenohumeral joint. The bone reads as a strut. Lateral visualization matters because clavicular curvature and end morphology determine how force transfers from the upper limb to the axial skeleton, and malalignment is easier to appreciate when you can judge anterior-posterior displacement relative to the ribs and scapula.
