Description
Seen in lateral profile, the hyoid bone sits at the anterior neck at about the C3 level, suspended superior to the thyroid cartilage and inferior to the mandible without a direct bony articulation. The central body (corpus ossis hyoidei) projects anteriorly, while the greater horn (cornu majus) sweeps posteriorly and slightly superiorly as a long lateral bar. Just superior and medial to the proximal greater horn, the lesser horn (cornu minus) forms a small conical prominence, a common attachment point for the stylohyoid ligament. Small bone. Big landmark.
