Description
Running along the posterolateral thigh, the long head of the biceps femoris is highlighted from a lateral perspective, arising proximally from the ischial tuberosity and descending obliquely toward the lateral knee. Superiorly and medially, its origin sits adjacent to the shared hamstring footprint with semitendinosus and semimembranosus, while the sciatic nerve typically courses deep to the proximal hamstring mass. Distally, the long head joins the short head (from the linea aspera and lateral supracondylar line of the femur) to form a common tendon that passes posterior to the lateral femoral condyle and inserts on the head of the fibula, lying near the fibular collateral ligament and the biceps femoris bursa.
