Description
Positioned on the anterolateral neck, the thyrohyoideus is shown as a short infrahyoid strap muscle spanning superiorly from the oblique line of the thyroid cartilage to the inferior border of the hyoid bone. A lateral male view places the muscle anterior to the cervical vertebral column and deep to where the sternohyoid would lie, with the mandible and skull base superiorly framing the suprahyoid region. The thyroid cartilage sits inferior to the hyoid, and the laryngeal framework is oriented medial to the muscle belly. Bone landmarks remain readable. Skull, cervical vertebrae, clavicle, scapula, ribs, and sternum provide spatial context. This angle matters because thyrohyoideus function is easiest to teach when you can see its direct bridge between the larynx and hyoid: it can depress the hyoid or elevate the larynx, depending on which structure is fixed during swallowing. In dysphagia assessment and post thyroidectomy voice or swallow complaints, clinicians often revisit infrahyoid mechanics and the nearby course of the ansa cervicalis (C1 to C3), the motor supply that can be affected in anterior neck surgery. The lateral relationship to the thyroid cartilage also supports discussion of laryngeal elevation during the pharyngeal phase. Small muscle, big consequences.
