Description
Shown from a lateral perspective of the anterior neck, the thyrohyoideus is presented as the short, quadrilateral infrahyoid strap muscle spanning between the oblique line of the thyroid cartilage inferiorly and the inferior border of the hyoid bone superiorly. Its fibers run superoposteriorly, lying deep to the sternohyoid and in continuity inferiorly with the sternothyroid, while the laryngeal framework (thyroid cartilage with its lamina and superior cornu, and the cricoid cartilage below) forms the rigid medial backdrop. Posteriorly, the contour of the laryngeal inlet and adjacent pharyngeal wall can be inferred by the curvature of the cartilaginous elements. Small but decisive anatomy. Functionally, the thyrohyoideus is the infrahyoid that blurs the usual “depress the hyoid” teaching rule: it can depress the hyoid bone or elevate the larynx, depending on which structure is fixed. That dual action becomes clinically tangible during swallowing, when laryngeal elevation contributes to airway protection, and during anterior neck surgery, where this muscle and its plane deep to sternohyoid guide exposure of the thyroid cartilage and the thyrohyoid membrane. This view also supports discussion of ansa cervicalis innervation of the strap muscles and how altered strap tension can affect laryngeal position after neck dissection or prolonged intubation. Use this asset in head and neck anatomy teaching to clarify infrahyoid layering, in speech and swallowing coursework to connect strap mechanics to laryngeal excursion, or in operative atlases and patient education materials describing approaches to the laryngeal framework and adjacent thyroid region.
