Description
Shown from the palmar aspect of an adult male hand, the palmaris brevis lies immediately deep to the skin along the ulnar border of the palm, spanning superficially over the hypothenar fascia and blending medially with the palmar aponeurosis. Radially, the thenar eminence and central palmar aponeurosis provide orientation, while distally the muscle approaches the skin of the proximal hypothenar region rather than the digits. Underlying osseous landmarks, including the carpal bones and metacarpals with their articular cartilage at the carpometacarpal and metacarpophalangeal joints, anchor the surface topography of the palm in anatomical position. It is a small muscle. Palmaris brevis often gets ignored in standard intrinsic hand charts, but this superficial plane matters when you are teaching the layered dissection of the palm or explaining ulnar-sided symptoms. Its fibers wrinkle the skin of the hypothenar eminence and can shield the superficial ulnar neurovascular structures during grip, so focal spasm or hypertrophy may present as palmaris brevis syndrome, a twitching or cramping along the ulnar palm that can be mistaken for ulnar nerve pathology at Guyon’s canal. Surgeons working through ulnar-sided palmar incisions also use this layer as a practical landmark before deeper exposure of the palmar aponeurosis and hypothenar compartment. Use this asset in upper limb anatomy labs to orient learners to superficial palmar layers before thenar and hypothenar compartment dissection, or in clinical teaching slides addressing ulnar tunnel syndromes and differential diagnosis of hypothenar pain and visible fasciculations. It also suits hand surgery or sports medicine publications that need a clear palmar reference for surface anatomy and superficial soft tissue relationships.
