Description

Arising from the medial aspect of the foot in a plantar orientation, the phalanges and metatarsals are presented with the interphalangeal articulations of the pedal digits in clear profile, including the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints of digits II to V and the single interphalangeal joint of the hallux. Along the medial and lateral margins of each interphalangeal joint, the collateral interphalangeal ligaments appear as paired fibrous bands spanning from the head of the proximal phalanx to the base of the next distal phalanx, lying plantar to the dorsal capsule and blending with the fibrocartilaginous plantar plate. Articular cartilage is indicated at the joint surfaces, framing the ligament insertions at the condyles and phalangeal bases. Small structures, big stability. Clinically, these collateral ligaments are the primary restraints to varus and valgus angulation at the toe interphalangeal joints, and their failure explains the coronal plane laxity seen after “jammed toe” injuries and phalangeal dislocations.
