Description
Running distally along each finger, the middle phalanx articulates with the base of the distal phalanx at the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint, where paired collateral ligaments course on the radial and ulnar sides of the joint line to blend with the fibrous joint capsule. From an anterior (palmar) perspective, the collateral ligaments sit lateral to the flexor tendon sheath and pulley system, flanking the volar plate that spans the palmar aspect of the DIP joint. Proximally, portions of the metacarpals and carpal region are included as orientation, with the radius and ulna only partially visible at the wrist. Lateral stability at the DIP joint depends on these collateral ligaments remaining taut during flexion, and this view makes their side-to-side restraint easy to teach against the backdrop of the phalanges. Clinically, they are stressed in DIP sprains from varus or valgus loads, and their integrity influences post-injury deviation and pinch mechanics, a common concern after ball-handling injuries or occupational trauma. Small structure, large consequences.
