Description
Across a posterior full body male view, the splenius capitis appears as a paired strap muscle in the posterolateral neck, running superolaterally from the lower nuchal ligament and upper thoracic spinous processes toward the mastoid process and lateral superior nuchal line. It sits deep to trapezius and sternocleidomastoid, and superficial to semispinalis capitis, with its fibers forming the lateral portion of the posterior cervical muscular mass. Inferiorly, its attachments blend into the upper back region near the spinous processes of T3 to T6, aligning medial to the scapular spines and lateral to the midline.
