Seen from a posterior perspective, the splenic artery courses tortuously along the superior border of the pancreas toward the splenic hilum, giving off multiple pancreatic branches to the gland. These vessels track posterior to the stomach and anterior to the left kidney region, with small arteries entering the pancreatic body and tail along their dorsal surface. The spleen lies lateral to the pancreatic tail, while the liver occupies the right upper quadrant and the stomach sits anterior to the pancreas, framing the retroperitoneal relationships. Orientation is clear. Posterior visualization of the pancreatic branches of the splenic artery matters when you are teaching or planning dissection of the lesser sac and the retropancreatic plane, where these small-caliber arteries are encountered during mobilization of the pancreatic tail. In distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy, short pancreatic branches can be a quiet source of bleeding if divided close to the gland, and they also help explain why splenic artery injury or ligation can compromise perfusion of the pancreatic body and tail.
