Posteriorly, the paired sixth ribs curve laterally from the thoracic vertebral column, their heads meeting the costal facets on adjacent vertebral bodies while the necks lead to the tubercles. At the level of the transverse processes, the smooth articular facet on each rib tubercle aligns with the transverse costal facet to form the costotransverse joint.
