Description
Anterior thoracic anatomy is centered on the paired sixth ribs (costae VI), shown curving anteromedially from their vertebral attachments to their costal cartilages at the lateral margin of the sternum. Each rib head articulates posteriorly with the bodies of T5 and T6 at the costovertebral joints, while the tubercle meets the transverse process of T6 at the costotransverse joint; from there, the shafts sweep laterally and then forward, descending slightly toward the midline. The intervertebral discs segment the thoracic vertebral column behind the rib cage, with the posterior elements aligned in the median plane. Symmetry is the point. Clinically, the sixth rib sits at a practical crossroads between surface anatomy and thoracic intervention. Along its inferior border runs the costal groove transmitting the intercostal vein, artery, and nerve, so pleural aspiration and chest tube placement target the superior margin of the adjacent rib to reduce neurovascular injury. At the anterior chest, the 6th costal cartilage helps define the inferior boundary of the cardiac silhouette and contributes to the costal margin region, a common site of costochondral pain syndromes and traumatic disruption. On imaging, counting to rib 6 is a routine step when localizing fractures or correlating a posterior rib abnormality with the corresponding vertebral level.
