Seventh Ribs, Anterior View

Description

Framed in anatomical position, the seventh ribs (costae VII) curve anterolaterally from the thoracic vertebral column and converge medially toward the sternum via their costal cartilages. Each rib articulates posteriorly at the costovertebral and costotransverse joints around the T7 level, then sweeps anteriorly so the cartilaginous segment reaches the sternum near the xiphisternal region. Superior and inferior margins define the intercostal spaces, with the costal grooves running along the inferior border. Paired symmetry is clear. As the last “true” ribs that attach directly to the sternum, the seventh ribs mark a practical boundary between the sternal rib cage and the costal margin formed by ribs VIII to X. Clinically, that distinction shows up in trauma patterning and in procedural planning: the neurovascular bundle (VAN) tracks in the costal groove, so chest tube placement and intercostal blocks are aimed just superior to the rib below to avoid the intercostal artery, vein, and nerve. Landmarking also matters for surface anatomy. The seventh costal cartilage helps define the costal angle and approximates the xiphoid level used when teaching cardiac and upper abdominal reference points. Course directors can drop this plate into thoracic wall modules, radiographic anatomy teaching (rib numbering on PA and lateral chest radiographs), and trauma education on rib fractures and pleural procedures.
