Seen from behind, the paired trapezius muscles form a broad diamond spanning the posterior neck and upper back, with superior fibers descending from the occipital bone and nuchal ligament toward the lateral third of the clavicle. Midline fibers run laterally from the spinous processes of the lower cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae to the acromion and spine of the scapula, while inferior fibers ascend from the lower thoracic spinous processes toward the medial end of the scapular spine. Superficial contours place trapezius over the levator scapulae and rhomboids, framing the posterior shoulder girdle medial to the deltoid and superior to latissimus dorsi. Orientation is unambiguous. This posterior perspective matters because trapezius is the main visible link between cervical posture and scapulothoracic mechanics, and you can track how its fiber directions support scapular elevation, retraction, and upward rotation during overhead reach.
