Description
Seen from a posterior aspect through a transparent adult male head and upper neck, the dominant venous landmarks include the confluence of sinuses (confluens sinuum) at the internal occipital protuberance and the straight sinus (sinus rectus) coursing anterosuperiorly toward the falx cerebri and tentorium cerebelli junction. The transverse sinuses extend laterally from the confluence along the attached margin of the tentorium cerebelli, then curve inferiorly as the sigmoid sinuses toward the jugular foramina. Superficial cerebral veins and superior cerebellar veins are suggested as tributaries converging toward these dural venous channels. Orientation is clear. Posterior venous anatomy matters when you need to teach, plan, or interpret what happens at the torcular region, where flow patterns vary and pathology concentrates. Dural venous sinus thrombosis often involves the transverse or sigmoid sinuses, and a posterior view helps correlate headache, papilledema, and venous infarction with the anatomic drainage routes into the internal jugular veins. This perspective also supports surgical navigation around the occipital bone and posterior fossa, where injury to the transverse sinus or bridging veins during suboccipital craniotomy can produce brisk, difficult-to-control bleeding.
