Description
Seen from a posterior perspective, the arterial and venous trees track from the axillary region into the arm, with the axillary artery and vein continuing distally as the brachial artery and paired brachial veins in the posterior compartment. Around the elbow, the vessel pattern reorganizes into the radial and ulnar arteries with accompanying deep veins, while superficial veins such as the cephalic laterally and basilic medially can be inferred where they approach the fascia and communicate across the cubital region. Distally, the ulnar artery contributes medially and the radial artery laterally toward the hand, feeding the palmar arches and digital branches via smaller arterioles and capillary beds. Color coding distinguishes oxygenated arterial flow (red) from venous return (blue). Posterior arm vasculature matters when you need to understand what lies deep to the triceps brachii and adjacent to the humerus, because the brachial artery and profunda brachii (deep artery of arm) course in proximity to the radial nerve within the radial groove. A humeral shaft fracture or posterior surgical exposure can endanger both nerve and vessel, and the distal reconstitution of flow through collateral pathways around the elbow helps explain why pulses may persist despite proximal injury. Small details count. This view also supports interpretation of angiography or CTA/MRA when posterior collaterals and venous drainage patterns must be matched to surface landmarks.
