Framed from a posterior perspective, the paired kidneys sit retroperitoneally on either side of the vertebral column, with the suprarenal (adrenal) glands crowning their superomedial poles. Each renal hilum faces anteromedially, so the renal arteries and renal veins are seen coursing medially toward the abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava rather than opening directly toward the viewer. Segmental branching is suggested as the renal artery approaches the sinus, while smaller venous tributaries converge into the renal vein; the ureter emerges inferiorly from the renal pelvis and descends toward the pelvis. Perihilar lymphatics and renal plexus nerves track alongside the vessels. Simple, readable relationships.
