Description
Anteriorly, the paired kidneys sit retroperitoneally on either side of the abdominal aorta, with the inferior vena cava positioned to its right, and each renal hilum facing anteromedially where the renal artery enters and the renal vein exits. Segmental branching of the renal arteries can be followed into interlobar, arcuate, and interlobular distributions as they course from the renal sinus toward the cortex beneath the fibrous renal capsule. Superior to each upper pole, the suprarenal (adrenal) glands cap the kidneys, while the ureters descend inferiorly from the renal pelvis toward the bladder. Color differentiation separates arterial inflow, venous drainage, and accompanying lymphatic channels and nodes. For teaching renal vascular anatomy, an anterior view clarifies the left to right asymmetry created by the great vessels, including the longer left renal vein crossing anterior to the aorta and the shorter right renal vein draining directly into the inferior vena cava. That relationship matters in nephrectomy, renal transplantation, and hilar dissection, where surgeons must anticipate early segmental arterial branching and the variable order of structures at the hilum (vein anterior, artery intermediate, pelvis posterior). It also grounds common clinical problems. Renal artery stenosis at the ostium can drive secondary hypertension, while congestion or collateral formation around the renal vein becomes relevant in renal vein thrombosis and in left sided venous compression patterns.
