Description
Arising from the abdominal aorta, the right or left renal artery courses laterally toward the renal hilum, where it divides into segmental branches before entering the renal sinus. From an anterior perspective of a sectioned male kidney, the renal cortex forms a peripheral shell deep to the fibrous renal capsule, while the medulla sits centrally as multiple renal pyramids whose apices point medially toward the renal pelvis. Interlobar arteries run between pyramids, then arch at the corticomedullary junction as arcuate arteries before giving off cortical radiate (interlobular) arteries and afferent arterioles supplying individual nephrons. The renal pelvis occupies the medial collecting space, continuous inferiorly with the proximal ureter. This anterior cutaway clarifies the kidney’s segmental arterial pattern, which matters because renal arteries are functional end arteries and segmental occlusion can infarct sharply demarcated parenchyma. Interventional radiology and transplantation teams also rely on this map when planning selective catheterization, managing renal artery stenosis, or documenting accessory renal arteries that increase the risk of ischemia if unrecognized.
