Description
Centered along the posterior midline, the cervical vertebrae (C1 to C7) are highlighted and framed superiorly by the occipital region and inferiorly by the upper thoracic spine. The atlas and axis sit at the craniovertebral junction, while the middle cervical vertebrae (classically C3 to C6) present bifid spinous processes projecting posteriorly and slightly inferiorly in a stepped series. Laterally, the cervical region transitions into the shoulder girdle silhouette, and inferior to C7 the thoracic vertebrae align with the rib heads and posterior ribs that arc laterally from the costovertebral joints. Posterior cervical bony landmarks matter because they guide both palpation and safe procedural corridors. The bifid spinous processes help you distinguish mid-cervical levels during surface anatomy teaching, and the prominent C7 spinous process provides a practical reference when counting vertebrae before posterior approaches. Fractures and dislocations at the craniovertebral junction (atlas and axis) and flexion-extension injuries of the subaxial cervical spine are routinely discussed with reference to posterior element alignment, and laminectomy or posterior cervical fusion planning depends on clear appreciation of the spinous processes, laminae, and their relationship to adjacent thoracic segments.
